Revenge of the Body Snatchers

Someone switched my sweet little smiley son for a Gremlin in the past couple of days.  I am pretty sure someone fed him after midnight too. Whoever this person is, I will find you and take the appropriate revenge.

Sweet Little Man

Right now, as I am writing this, he is spinning in circles babbling incoherently (not that he ever babbles coherently).  My patience has definitely been tested this past week.  It's weird, it's like it happened overnight too so it is not like I had a chance to ease into this new personality change of the terrible twos or "the days of Gremlin" as I like to call it.  So, I have absolutely no idea how to handle it when he suddenly starts screaming at the top of his lungs for no apparent reason.  I should probably not admit this, but I have been so frustrated and confused as to how to deal with it, that I have actually just screamed along with him (not at him) just with him.  This was actually surprisingly effective for a few minutes since it rendered him utterly confused and, thus, speechless for a moment.  Although it worked, I am pretty sure that it is not a recommended manner in which to deal with this behavior.

Gremlin Form

Well, I hate to say it, but my brain has seemingly been split in two from the blood curdling screams emanating from my Gremlin, so I may have to end this post rather abru......

Buyer's Remorse

So, you know that awesome table I got at Goodwill the other day?  Yeah, the one that I was raving about that I just could not live without?

Yup, that's the one!
Well...as many of you crafters/thrifty people know out there, sometimes, your inner designer/crafter has a knock down drag out fight with your inner thrifter and my inner designer is evidently an accomplished UFC fighter.  You see, I had this vision....muah ha ha....my husband cringes when I utter those words.  I had a vision of an indoor 24/7, 365 day a year picnic.  A vision of whitewashed wood, billowing hydrangea, and sparkly pitchers of lemonade with slices of lemon peeking through.  Doesn't that sound awesome?  I thought so too...  plus, I am soooo not a formal dining room type of gal.  I come from Florida where I ran barefoot through the cool summer grass and sun warmed sand.  I wanted a constant reminder of this for when the cold Indiana winter is staring me back in the face...

Not Picnic Weather

My husband will tell you that once I have a craft idea/design idea pop into my head, I become a woman possessed.  I simply cannot rest until I have finished.  My idea is to have glam up a traditional picnic table and make it my dining room table!

On a side note, I am having to finish this post in the basement since a strong line of storms is moving through....those of you that know me know that I am just LOVING this.

This is what my "Help Me" face looks like

So, I set to Craigslist to see what I could find.  After searching awhile, I came across a few people that said they would build me a custom picnic table.  Hmmmmm....this sounds even more fun!  So I sent out a few emails to see what it would cost and if they could build me a custom one with detachable benches.  A couple of days past and no response from anyone and so, I decided in typical me fashion, I will build my own picnic table (because I secretly think that I am a superhero in my own mind, capable of leaping any craft project in a single bound)!  Much to my husband's dismay, I set about trying to find some blueprints (because I have read blueprints before.....ummmm...no).

Thankfully, that is when I had my little escapade to Goodwill for the other table that you can read about HERE.  So, that table did have a purpose for a small time and saved me from possibly putting a nail through my hand or worse, sawing an appendage off (because I secretly am not a superhero and have never done woodwork in my life).

Then, as I am home that evening, still buzzing from getting my Goodwill table, I check my email and find a response from a fellow going by the initials of J.C. (Yes, folks....a woodworker/carpenter with the initials of J.C.).  Trust me, the irony and metaphorical weight of this did not escape me. His email had an enthusiasm that came through that I could not deny.  He was excited to build me this table and had already set out to buy the materials.  It was simply meant to be.

So, this brings me to this Sunday morning.  At a little before 9 am.....J.C. himself and his brother came rolling up with my beautiful new picnic table and detachable benches.  Here she is!

I am not done with her yet though.  This is just a sneak peak of my dining room before.  Tune in soon for a look of the after!  Thanks J.C.!

Addiction

My name is Amanda and I am addicted to Goodwill.  You know it is bad when you name your blog after it.

It's true, I get a high (a really good high) off of finding awesome things that someone has discarded or cast away and repurposing them.  In fact, I am buzzing right now off of a HUGE haul from an impromptu visit to a new Goodwill down the street *shivers with excitement over the prospect of a "foreign" Goodwill* that I visited yesterday.

It happened as it normally does... it was a normal morning with the usual routine.  As I was adding ingredients to my Crock Pot for that evenings' dinner (love my Crock Pot), I had a thought run through my head that I needed to get out of the house and enjoy the day.  So, I loaded Cameron into his carseat after setting my Crock on high and set out on an "expedition" and text the hubby to let him know that I am going out.

As I am sitting at the crossroads of our subdivision, I get a sudden surge of excitement that runs through me as I remember seeing that familiar dark blue sign the other day....there is a new Goodwill that I have yet to explore in my neighborhood.  Then, another thrill runs down my spine....it's in a well-to-do neighborhood.....OH GOODY!  So, I set off.

It just so happens that I need a few things for the house since we recently moved into a larger house and also sold/gave away a good bit of furniture when we made the move from Florida to Indiana.  I started making a list in my head of things that we need....dining table and chairs, dresser for the closet, and a lateral file for the office.  I always try to make a list of things before I get there or else I get myself into trouble!

As I am driving up, I see a woman walking out with two large bags. "I wonder what goodies she got?  I hope she left some for me!"  Then I see a large herd of people storming the doors....."Oh no, they are certainly going to get all the good stuff!"  So I unstrap Cam and hurriedly walk in trying not to act too overeager...I REALLY do have a problem.  I head over to the furniture area and crane my neck to peer around a large silk tree and see some chairs....promising...my heart starts to pound with anticipation.  I see a table....but there is a man with his wife sitting next to it.  I casually walk over (I am sure I probably had an intensity in my eyes or a certain desperation that only a person addicted to Goodwill could have) because the couple backed away slowly, not making eye contact.

After I was alone with the table and chairs, I circled it and realized how solid it was and glanced at the price tag.  It was only $59.99 for a five piece!  I noticed that there was a lady coming my way and suddenly felt very territorial so I sat down and quickly ripped the tag off to take to the front to show ownership!
Table and Chairs (Good solid wood too)

As I was sitting there, I came out of my table haze and my eyes focused in on a dresser.  Could it be, that I might find two pieces on my list today!  That never happens!  I knelt down on the couch sitting next to it and checked out it's bones and though it is a little rough around the edges, it is solid.  A project for me to complete...even better!  I look at the price tag and it's only $20.99.....SOLD!

As I am walking to the register, I get a glimpse of what looks like a filing cabinet....it could not possibly be.  To find all things on one's Goodwill list NEVER happens.  So, I inspect a little more and sure enough....it's a solid wood, lateral file with the file separators already built in.  I about fainted at this point and excitedly moved a VERY large microwave off of it to get a closer look and this is what I find.....

It was only $24.99.  Folks, I might as well retire at this point from my Goodwilling days since a day like this will likely never happen again (although, I hope it does for the sake of my blog).  :)  Suffice it to say that my husband had a busy evening since there was NO way that I could fit all of this in my Mazda3....so, here I sit, still buzzing a little bit from my super haul of goodies and dreaming of my next expedition.....there is a guest room to furnish!

So, those of you that know me, know that I have a sweet little guy that is 17 months old by the name of Cameron.  Since we have had him, my decorative tastes have not changed but the way that I look at home decor has definitely evolved.  Suddenly, even the most harmless looking overstuffed recliner looks like a potential threat ....sitting there all puffy and inviting.

Well, my son, being the exceptionally gifted young man that he is recently dove head first into my husband's recliner not once....but twice.  Evidently, he is part homing pigeon and was able to mimic the exact route across the living that he took the first time that rendered a large red goose egg right between his eyes.  The second time he did this, he managed to sever his frenulum (which I have learned is the useless piece of skin that holds your top lip to your gums).  This poor overstuffed recliner has been excommunicated to the in laws to say the least....you hurt the kid and you are out!

Before swan dive into recliner
After swan dive (See the goose egg?)

So, when we recently moved to a new house with a fireplace, I thought to myself, "Oh boy, a fireplace!"  Then, upon viewing the beautifully rustic brick hearth with jagged, hard, pointy bricks.....my heart dropped.  Things that used to be very desirable in a home now have taken on a seemingly sinister profile since having a baby.  So, how does one go about baby proofing a beautiful hearth like this while still preserving some style?  I had an idea!  Here is the solution I came up with....

Add a little foam and some fabric and you have a comfy and stylish bench!

After shopping around, I found some large pieces of foam for $16.00 and bought two, along with the fabric which was around $2.50/yard.  This is still a work in progress....I ended up sewing the two pieces of foam together since I was unsure of the best way to join foam.  Anyone with suggestions?  I also have not attached the fabric since I am trying to decide if I want to make it interchangeable with snaps or Velcro.

After looking online at other options, they wanted $285.00 for something similar and the other option was a bumper like contraption that was pretty unsightly.  So far, this seems to be doing the trick!  Let me know what you think!  What other baby proofing ideas do you all have?

Being that this is my first post and all, please forgive me for not knowing what I am doing...lol.  For my readers (not even sure if I will have any), I am sure there will be grammatical errors but keep in mind that I feel as though I am baring my soul here.

I have been toying with the idea to have a blog for awhile and now that I am a stay-at-home mom, I feel that this might be a good thing for me to do to keep from going clinically insane.  Here you will find little pieces of me and my everyday life (from crafts to recipes) and glimpses into my mind (this could be a scary blog due to this)!  Please enjoy and I hope that you find inspiration and that maybe you giggle a bit too....
